  2. Serum (red/gold) and EDTA plasma (purple) are also acceptable sample types.
  3. It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 2 hours from time of collection.
  4. Total bilirubin specimens are stable for 24 hours at 20-25°C, 7 days at 4-8°C, and 6 months at -20°C.
  5. Protect sample from light if immediate analysis is not possible.

Useful For

Measurement of the levels of bilirubin, an organic compound formed during the normal and abnormal destruction of red blood cells, is used in the diagnosis and treatment of liver, hemolytic, hematological, and metabolic disorders, including hepatitis and gall bladder blockage. Diseases or conditions which, through hemolytic processes, produce bilirubin faster than the liver can metabolize it, cause the levels of unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin to increase in the circulation. Liver immaturity and several other diseases in which the bilirubin conjugation mechanism is impaired cause similar elevations of circulating unconjugated bilirubin. Bile duct obstruction or damage to hepatocellular structure causes increases in the levels of both conjugated (direct) and unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin in the circulation.
