Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.

Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

STAT orders: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Specimen Requirement

  1. Lithium heparin plasma (green) is the specimen of choice.
  2. Serum (red/gold) is also an acceptable sample type. 
  3. Gel tubes are acceptable. 
  4. Specimens should be protected from prolonged exposure to light. 
  5. It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 2 hours from time of collection.
  6. Direct Bilirubin specimens are stable for 2 days at 20-25°C, 7 days at 4-8°C, and 6 months at -20°C. 

Useful For

Bilirubin is an organic compound formed by the reticuloendothelial system during the normal and abnormal destruction of red blood cells. Measurements of bilirubin are used in the diagnosis of liver disease, in the detection of hemolytic anemia, and to evaluate degrees of jaundice. Direct bilirubin has been conjugated by the liver and prepared for excretion through the biliary tract into the intestine.

 

Reference Values

Adult serum or plasma: 0.0-0.3 mg/dL.
