Performance
Testing is performed Monday through Friday.
Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
Specimen Requirement
Specimen is collected one hour after the patient has consumed one 50 g bottle of glucose drink.
The patient need not be fasting. The patient should remain seated throughout the procedure. The patient may have water to drink but nothing else. Coffee and smoking materials are prohibited.
- Lithium heparin plasma (green) is the specimen of choice. 0.5mL
- Serum (red/gold) and EDTA plasma (purple) are also acceptable sample types.
- It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 30 minutes from time of collection.
- Serum/plasma glucose specimens are stable for 8 hours at 25°C, or 72 hours at 4°C.
Useful For
The 50 gm load is a screening test for Gestational Diabetes Melitis; diagnosis is based on a full Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).
Reference Values
> 130 mg/dL one hour post dose; Gestational Diabetes
suspected.
This threshold identifies about 90% of women with Gestational
Diabetes Melitis (GDM). A threshold value of >140 mg/dL with
this screen identifies about 80% of women with GDM.
