Test Code GLUF Glucose (Fasting) LAB81

Performing Laboratory

UnityPoint The Finley Hospital

Test Method

Enzymatic; Roche cobas Pro

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.

Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

STAT: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Specimen Requirement

  1. Lithium heparin plasma (green) is the specimen of choice. 0.5mL
  2. Serum (red/gold) and EDTA plasma (purple) are also acceptable sample types.
  3. It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 30 minutes from time of collection.
  4. Serum/plasma glucose specimens are stable for 8 hours at 25°C, or 72 hours at 4°C.

Useful For

Glucose is the major carbohydrate present in the peripheral blood. Oxidation of glucose is the major source of cellular energy in the body. Glucose derived from dietary sources is converted to glycogen for storage in the liver or to fatty acids for storage in adipose tissue. The concentration of glucose in blood is controlled within narrow limits by many hormones, the most important of which are produced by the pancreas.

The most frequent cause of hyperglycemia is diabetes mellitus resulting from a deficiency in insulin secretion or action. A number of secondary factors also contribute to elevated blood glucose levels. These include pancreatitis, thyroid dysfunction, renal failure and liver disease. Hypoglycemia is less frequently observed. A variety of conditions may cause low blood glucose levels such as insulinoma, hypopituitarism or insulin induced hypoglycemia. Glucose measurement in urine is used as a diabetes screening procedure and to aid in the evaluation of glycosuria, to detect renal tubular defects, and in the management of diabetes mellitus.

Reference Values

Newborns (0-1 Month):

  1. Reference ranges:
    Whole Blood/Plasma: 50-99 mg/dL
Non-fasting: A reference range for non fasting glucose has not been established for this age group.
  2. Critical Values:
    Nonfasting < 40 or > 300 mg/dL

One Month to Adults:

  1. Reference ranges:
    Fasting: 70-99 mg/dL
    Non-fasting: 70–140 mg/dL
  2. Critical Values:
    < 50 or > 450 mg/dL
