Test Code TRIG Triglycerides LAB134

Performing Laboratory

UnityPoint The Finley Hospital

Test Method

Enzymatic colorimetric test; Roche cobas Pro.

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.

Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours after the
specimen arrives at the testing site.

Expedite orders: Typically completed within 1 hour after the
specimen arrives at the testing site.

STAT orders: Typically completed within 30 minutes after
the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Specimen Requirement

0.5 mL lithium heparin plasma or serum is required.

Useful For

Evaluation of risk factors in individuals with elevated
cholesterol values

Since cholesterol and triglycerides can vary independently,
measurement of both is more meaningful than the measurement of
cholesterol only.

Reference Values

    • Males: <200 mg/dL
    • Females: <175 mg/dL
  2. Pediatric (2-9 years):
    • Acceptable: < 75 mg/dL
    • Borderline high: 75-99 mg/dL
    • High: ≥ 100 mg/dL
  3. Pediatric (10-17 years):

CPT Code Information

84478 Chemistry: Triglycerides

LOINC Code Information

2571-8  Triglyceride [Mass/Volume] In Serum Or
Plasma

Additional Specimen Collection Information

Collect blood in a lithium heparin, green-top or red-top tube
from a fasting patient. 12 hour fast is recommended. PST and
SST (gel tubes) are acceptable. Serum or plasma should be separated
from contact with the cells within 2 hours of collection. Specimens
not centrifuged within 4 hours of collection may be rejected.
Refrigerate the specimen if unable to assay within 8 hours of
collection. Hemolyzed specimen (>2+) is not acceptable.

Limitations

Patient venipunctured immediately after or during the administration of Metamizole (Dipyrone) may
lead to falsely low results for Triglyceride. Venipuncture should be performed prior to the administration of Metamizole.
