Specimen Requirements
Preferred Container/Tube: Gold-top serum tube or red-top serum tube
Acceptable: EDTA lavender-top and lithium or sodium heparin green-top
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of serum or plasma
Minium: 0.25 mL of serum or plasma
Stability and Storage:
- Room temperature: 48 hours
- Refrigeration (2°- 8°C): 7 days
- Frozen (≤ -20°C): Undetermined. Freeze samples only once and mix thoroughly after thawing.
Transport: Refrigerated
Note: This assay is affected by biotin interference.

Clinical evaluation of serum testosterone, along with serum LH, assists in evaluation of hypogonadal males. Major causes of lowered testosterone in males include hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, testicular failure, hyperprolactinemia, hypopituitarism, some types of liver and kidney diseases, and critical illness.
