Performance

Monday through Sunday

Routine: Typically completed within 4 hours after arrival at thetesting site.

STAT: Typically completed within 30 minutes after specimenarrives at the testing site.

Specimen Requirement

  1. Lithium heparin plasma (green) is the specimen of choice: 500 mcL. Gel tubes are not acceptable.
  2. Serum (red) and EDTA plasma (purple) are also acceptable sample types.
  3. It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 2 hours from time of collection.
  4. Salicylate specimens are stable for 2 weeks at 4°C. 

Useful For

Salicylate is a common drug used in many formulations due to its analgesicand anti‑inflammatory properties. Salicylate overdose can cause metabolicacidosis with a high anionic gap, gastrointestinal and central nervous system disturbances, as well as encephalopathy and renal failure. Therefore, a method for the rapid and accurate determination of salicylate is needed.
