Test Code LDH Lactate Dehydrogenase (LD) LAB96
Performing Laboratory
UnityPoint The Finley Hospital
Test Method
Enzymatic Rate Method; Roche cobas Pro
Performance
Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.
Routine: Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
STAT: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
Specimen Requirement
- Lithium heparin plasma (green) is the specimen of choice. 500μL.
- Serum (red/gold) is also an acceptable sample type.
- It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 2 hours from time of collection.
- LD Specimens are stable for 7 days at 15-25C. Do not refrigerate.
Useful For
The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme is widely distributed in tissue, particularly in the heart, liver, muscles and kidneys. The LDH in serum can be separated into five different isoenzymes based on their electrophoretic mobility.
Elevated serum levels of LDH have been observed in a variety of disease states. The highest levels are seen in patients with megaloblastic anemia, disseminated carcinoma and shock. Moderate increases occur in muscular disorders, nephrotic syndrome and cirrhosis. Mild increases in LDH activity have been reported in cases of myocardial or pulmonary infarction, leukemia, hemolytic anemia and non‑viral hepatitis.
