Test Code CREAT Creatinine LAB66

Performing Laboratory

UnityPoint The Finley Hospital

Test Method

Enzymatic; Roche cobas Pro

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.

Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

STAT: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Specimen Requirement

  1. Lithium heparin plasma (Green) is the specimen of choice: 0.5mL
  2. Serum (Red/Gold) and EDTA plasma (Purple) are also acceptable sample types.
  3. It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 2 hours from time of collection.
  4. Serum/plasma stability: 7 days at 15-25°C, 7 days at 2-8°C, 3 months at -15°C.

Useful For

Creatinine is a break‑down product of creatine phosphate in muscle, and is usually produced at a fairly constant rate by the body (depending on muscle mass). It is freely filtered by the glomeruli and, under normal conditions, is not re‑absorbed by the tubules to any appreciable extent. A small but significant amount is also actively secreted. In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of renal disease, the monitoring of renal dialysis, creatinine measurements are used for the calculation of the fractional excretion of other urine analytes (e. g., albumin, α‑amylase).
