Methodology

Culture by Conventional Method to Specifically Isolate and Identify Staphylococcus aureus that is Methicillin (Oxacillin) Resistant.

Note: If MRSA is detected, infection prevention will be notified and inpatients will be isolated.

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

Specimens other than nasal or wound for routine or pre-surgical screening (ie, tracheal aspirate)

 

Unacceptable Specimens:

Routine nasal screening identified by Infection Control, pre-surgical nasal or wound screening

 

1. Collect specimen as instructed by microbiology laboratory.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.
