Performing Laboratory
UnityPoint The Finley Hospital
Test Method
Enzymatic; Roche cobas Pro
Performance
Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.
Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours
STAT orders: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
Specimen Requirement
- Lithium heparin plasma (green) is the specimen of choice: 500μL.
- Serum (red/gold) is also an acceptable specimen type.
- It is recommended that the serum or plasma be separated from contact with cells within 2 hours from time of collection.
- Plasma lipase (green) specimens are stable for 7 days at 15-25°C, 7 days at 2-8°C, and 2 months at -15°C.
- Serum lipase (red/gold) specimens are stable for 7 days at 20-25°C, 7 days at 4-8°C, and 1 year at -20°C.
Useful For
Pancreatic lipases have for many years been undeniably the most important clinical chemistry parameters for the differential diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas. The lipase activity determination has gained increasing international recognition because of its high specificity and rapid response. After acute pancreatitis the lipase activity increases within 4‑8 hours, reaches a peak after 24 hours and decreases after 8 to 14 days. However, there is no correlation between the lipase activity determined in serum and the extent of damage to the pancreas.
