Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Pleural and peritoneal (ascites, pancreatic) fluid
Acceptable: Other body fluids must have Pathology approval before being reported
Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of body fluid.
Stability: Specimens can be stored at 2 – 8°C for 5 days. For longer storage, samples may be
frozen at -20°C or colder for up to 6 months.
Note: 1. Bilirubin is photosensitive. Specimens must be protected from light.
2. Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.
